Say Goodbye to Like-gating on Facebook
Effective November 5, 2014 a common practice known as “Like-Gating” on Facebook used by advertisers, and brands in sweepstakes and contests will now be prohibited. This sort of practice allowed for a company or brand to incentivize a user to “Like” their Facebook page as a condition to entering a sweepstakes, contest or interacting with an app on the social network. According to the latest revision to the Facebook Platform Policies: “Effective November 5th, 2014, you may no longer incentivize people to like your app’s Page.” This will affect many advertisers, brands, marketing agencies, and app developers. Not only will this change the way certain apps interact with the Facebook algorithm, but will force companies using Facebook to conduct these games of chance and skill to work harder to get a Facebook user to “Like” their page.
