Hit by Another Driver? Here’s What to Do Next

A car accident can turn your day — or your life — upside down in seconds. Whether it’s a fender bender or a serious crash, knowing what to do immediately can make all the difference. If you’ve been hit by another driver, here’s what to do next to protect your health, your legal rights, and your personal injury claim.

1. Check for Injuries and Call 911

Your safety is the priority. If you or anyone else is injured, call 911 right away. Even in a minor collision, reporting the accident and requesting medical help is a smart move.

2. Move to a Safe Spot

If your car can still move, pull over to a safe place. Turn on your hazard lights so other drivers know to slow down and steer clear.

3. Exchange Information

Get the other driver’s:

  • Name and contact info

  • License plate number

  • Insurance company and policy number

Keep the conversation simple. Don’t admit fault or argue at the scene.

4. Document the Scene

Take clear photos and videos of:

  • Vehicle damage

  • Road conditions and traffic signs

  • Any visible injuries

These can support your case later if you file a personal injury claim.

5. Seek Medical Attention

Even if you feel okay, get checked by a doctor. Some injuries don’t show up right away. Medical records will also support your claim if you pursue compensation.

6. Notify Your Insurance

Report the accident to your insurance company. Be factual, but avoid giving detailed statements before speaking with a lawyer.

7. Talk to a Personal Injury Attorney

If you were hit by another driver, here’s what to do next: talk to a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. Insurance companies may try to minimize what they owe you. An experienced attorney will protect your rights and fight for full compensation — including medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

We’re Here to Help After Your Accident

Don’t face the aftermath of a car accident alone. Our personal injury team will guide you every step of the way and fight for what you deserve.
