Nassau County School-Zone Speed Cameras
Since their inception in late summer, Nassau Residents have called the 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. speed cameras ‘scam-cams’ – saying they are designed to make money. My office has received numerous calls from residents about how to fight these tickets. When they realize that the cost to hire an attorney is higher than the cost of the speed camera ticket, these residents are even more frustrated. With public pressure building up, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano announced yesterday that starting Monday December 8th, the speed cameras will only operate four hours per day – 7am to 9am, and 2pm to 4pm.
There is still controversy over whether the implementation of these cameras is really about child safety, or more about raking in large amounts of money in fines. However the new hours of operation attempt to ease that debate.
