Jet Ski

Jet Ski Violations in Long Island

Jet skiing is a favorite summer pastime in Long Island, fast, fun, and popular from the South Shore to the North Fork. But personal watercraft (PWC) come with strict regulations, and law enforcement is active throughout the season. Jet Ski violations in Long Island are more common than most people realize, and a ticket can quickly turn a day of fun into a serious legal issue.

Common Jet Ski Violations in Long Island

1. Operating Without a Safe Boating Certificate
Starting in 2025, all jet ski operators must carry a New York State Safe Boating Certificate. Many riders, especially teens, are unaware of this requirement. You must be at least 14 years old and certified to legally operate a PWC.

2. Speeding or Reckless Operation
Tickets are frequently issued for riding too fast in no-wake zones, weaving between boats, or creating hazardous wakes. These behaviors can be classified as reckless operation, which may lead to criminal charges.

3. Riding After Dark
Jet skis are only permitted on the water between sunrise and sunset. Evening rides, even just past dusk, are illegal and can result in tickets or seizure of the watercraft.

4. Missing Safety Equipment
New York law requires that every operator and passenger wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. The Jet Ski must also be equipped with a functioning engine cut-off switch (lanyard), which must be attached to the rider at all times.

5. Overloading or Unauthorized Riders
Jet skis have strict capacity limits. Allowing an underage or uncertified rider to operate the PWC, or riding with too many people, can result in fines, especially during spot checks by marine patrol.

What Happens If You Get a Jet Ski Ticket?

Depending on the violation, a citation could result in:

  • Fines

  • Mandatory court appearances

  • Possible criminal charges

  • Points on your driver’s license or boating certificate

  • Impoundment of your Jet Ski

These tickets are typically issued by local, county, or state marine enforcement and are often handled in the town or village court where the violation occurred.

Get Back on the Water the Right Way

If you’ve been cited for Jet Ski violations in Long Island, don’t ignore it. These tickets can carry lasting consequences, but taking the right legal steps can make all the difference.
