DMV Point System Guide for New York (Updated 2026)
Beginning in February 2026, New York’s DMV will implement significant changes to the driver point system that affect how points are calculated, how long they remain on a driving record, and how quickly drivers may face license consequences.
Under the new system, the DMV will review driving violations over a 24-month period instead of the previous 18-month window. Drivers may also face license review or suspension after accumulating fewer points than under the current rules.
In addition, several common traffic violations will now carry higher point values, and some violations that previously did not affect a driver’s point total will now count toward their license.
Because points now remain active for a longer period, even a single traffic stop can impact a driver’s license for up to two full years.
Drivers should not assume that a traffic ticket is minor and should understand the potential long-term consequences before pleading guilty or paying a fine.
